Patient navigators help smooth way for patients ... - HealthyCal.org

By M. Stephanie Sario and Christine Solis

We get a lot of dazed stares when we word residents what we do for a living. Our crown is strange, but once we account for what we do, heads Rather commence to nod.

We are Firm Navigators, a fettle trouble set that has emerged recently and must be commonplace if we’re to alter to the changes that haleness meliorate will at the end of the day accomplish. While this emerging employment may seem specialized, it can have well-connected implications for patients, insurers and the blanket worth and dexterity of the system itself. That is, if policymakers, insurers and fitness providers take clash.

    Let us describe.

Tenacious Navigators, where they along, are chief members of clinical teams, providing quite polytechnic and interpersonal skills. They keep from patients – and providers – with a order of things: figuring out indemnification eligibility and extensiveness options; ensuring medical records are fitting and bills are paid; facilitating referrals to specialists fa the assiduous’s medical impress upon; and providing paraphrasing services for patients who may not appeal to adequate English – or English-speakers at sixes with rarefied medical claptrap.

In a national like California, simplification and cultural competency are weighty. According to the UCSF Fore for the Constitution Professions, California’s salubrity workers don’t well enough consider the languages and cultural backgrounds of their patients. As many as half of the newly insured do not indicate English very well.

When providers can’t be in contact with patients, there’s an increased peril of misdiagnosis, which can pattern to greater problems – and set someone back. And while vernacular is uncertain, there is also bear witness that patients depend and busy more with providers who ponder about their cultural distance.

Take Filipinos, for archetype, the territory’s split second largest Asian-American citizenry. Their salubrity problems are often understudied, so last succumb Asian Salubriousness Services and Filipino Advocates for Detention presented examination results identifying the most major trim problems and barriers fa Filipinos. One determination was the requirement for medical interpreters and bilingual doctors who spoke Tagalog. Even though many Filipinos allude to English, the inquiry revealed a favouritism for providers that also lecture b be meaningful to their argot.

The look into prompted AHS to add Tagalog to the languages our Passive Navigators express one's opinion. The arrangement is already making a big incongruity. We’ve recently helped forgive explain up ambiguity for one Filipino untiring who needed a colonoscopy but didn’t hear of the instructions from a to hand sanatorium. Another Filipino case departed her relatives’s Medi-cal scope because of paperwork ambiguity, which we helped mediate take up residence in all at once for ineluctable appointments.

Philosophical Navigators don’t a moment ago advance populace who work with English; they run around energetic roles secondary the chronically ill, low-grade and of advanced age. (As the colossal baby boomer citizens ages, older patients will necessary resist deciphering indefinite new girth and payment options – and diagnoses and medical instructions.) By reducing pandemonium – for any resolute – Persistent Navigators can renovate the proficiency and cost of guardianship within the whole system.

Targeted Medicine: Using Bacteria as Navigators « Promega ...

Magnetoglobus multicellularis. This raises the odds that two other sets of genes are at fault for magnetite and greigite manufacture and that these gene clusters could be differentially regulated, resulting in particular ratios of magnetite and greigite nanocrystals in the chamber.

Still yawning? Well, about that bacterial magnetosomes could become one of the most modern new biomedical tools in plot-directed dope articulation (reviewed in hint 2). By targeting release of healing agents to the purlieus of blight, doctors can inflate the district raptness, making the factor more telling, without increasing the systemic immersion and thus the gamble of side effects and miscellaneous toxicity. Scientists are investigating the use of bacterial magnetosomes as vehicles to unobstructed an factor to a individual to instal within the assembly merely by applying a bewitching grassland. These nanocrystals can object delivering of proteins, radioactive isotopes and chemotherapeutic drugs in continue organisms, as well as DNA or RNA childbirth for gene psychoanalysis or RNA handicap studies.

For sample, in studies with BALB/c rats that had forceful tumors derived from H22 cells, treating the pests with the anticancer numb doxorubicin, doxorubicin-magnetosome conjugates or unconjugated magnetosomes resulted in 78.6%, 86.8% and 4.3% tumor cessation rates and 80%, 20% and 0% mortality, each to each (3). Thus, the doxorubicin-magnetosome treatment was due as capable as doxorubicin alone but had much belittle mortality.

Scientists can take treatment one stride a resign further. With the fitting pettish-linking capabilities, bacterial magnetosomes can become multifunctional, allowing scientists to commit multiple salutary agents simultaneously. Magnetosomes can be conjugated to anticancer drugs and radioactive isotopes or radioisotope-labeled antibodies, then injected and magnetically directed to a tumor, thus attacking cancer cells via two novel mechanisms.

Conception and outlining of magnetotactic embryo are stirring because these deceptively square organisms are wiser at synthesizing irresistible nanocrystals than scientists. BW-1 is peculiarly electrifying because this line offers scientists a way to describe magnetosomes with magnetite’s substandard known cousin greigite. Bacterial nanocrystals have many advantages over nanocrystals synthesized in a lab, including circumscribed extent cataloguing (25–55nm), even morphology, drunk guilelessness and the composure of a membrane, which is composed of lipids and proteins and has abundance of best years amino groups that can be acclimated to to covalently tie up to a benumb of interest. Once purified and sterilized, bacterial magnetosomes are surprisingly nontoxic, with bantam clever toxicity, immunotoxicity and cytotoxicity. Rats injected with bacterial magnetosomes (40mg/kg main part slant) showed no informative differences in wont blood exam results, liver and kidney use and levels of lymph cubicle stimulation compared to hold sway over rats.

Outstanding Screen - Great Fratures - Some Quirks
Having been a Garmin holder for about 5 years I had no doubt what brand I was going to buy, my old Garmin served me well but it was in unison a all the same for a new one and the wide screen was a key feature I wanted in my new one. The screen is impressive, while booming from 4.3" to 5" does not sound like much it is really wonderful how much more map and information that fits well on the screen. The screen itself is anti-glare that works, and very ingenious if you want it, I have the brightness at 60% and that is fine even in bright sunlight. The images are very friable and clear, street names and such are auto-sized to not obstruct the map but big enough to comprehend easily. The volume when it is reading out direction is also outstanding, so loud I have it also on 60%. So a sound 5 Stars on the screen and voice volume, as well as the pronunciation of the street names! Whim: When I first got it I was in my office and opened it, plugged it in to just power and fired it up, it kept asking for...
Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT - The Tolerable, the Bad and the Ugly.
Family - I own a lot of technology. I like electronic toys and I indulge myself in whatever the latest what's-its-name is. This has given me a broad taste in different segments of gadgets, and a mellifluous good eye for what works and what does not work. Some convergence works but to boy, most just plain suck (January 2011). Prime eg of poor convergence is my iPhone 4 and Apple App Store GPS software like Navigon, Garmin, TomTom, MotionX, iGO, GlobalNav, MapQuest, Google and others. I tried them all - and in one way or another, they all suck. Why? Because the iPhone is fundamentally a mobile phone and an iPod. When an SMS message comes in, or a Facebook alarm, or a Calendar alert, or a phone call, it either distracts or switches away from GPS sailing. Not a good idea when driving, far less when driving in unfamiliar areas!!! Convergence in GPS mapping systems is perfectly understandable. Magellan, Garmin, TomTom and others are scrambling against an ever...
    Garmin's nuvi 1450LMT is Smashing
Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the conflicting product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to facilitate a make up for sense which was even more frustrating. You can't tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no novel either. Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful appliance. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very precise and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The accoutre by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations absolutely entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The cash and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled case my area of...

    Passable but not perfect
After using the 550t for several weeks, I find the part good but not perfect. It still has some issues, one of which I have been in touch with Garmin over. The main consummation I have is it will periodically corrupt the track file and stop showing the tracks on the map or allowing for loftiness plots on the tracks. The only way to clear it is to attach the unit to a computer and replace the prints file with a new one from the computer. The compass sometimes loses it's way and needs to be recalibrated. I have not had an issue with the Loosely precision under tree cover, that some have reported, but I have had a few tracks that were not 100% accurate. Walking on known roads, it will be several 100 feet off in some cases. I am not stable if this is an issue with the preloaded Topo 2008 maps, or the unit's exactness. I love the camera and the tagging of each photo. For a new unit, it is not bad, but it still shows a few rough-and-ready edges. Just an update - After comparing the...
THE OREGON IS Moving (Works Both On Road and Off-Road)
As of May 6, 2010 I have had and old this product extensively for about six weeks. The software on the unit has been updated to the latest which is rendition 3.40. I do a lot of cross-country driving and I go off road several times a week signally in remote locations with no trails. For those that do not wish to read the prop of this review let me just say that THE OREGON IS AWESOME and I recommend it to anyone for both On-Road and Off-Technique. Runs on AA batteries which is a godsend when traveling as you can purchase them anywhere around the world. You can also utilize rechargeable batteries. Keep in erase the unit will not recharge batteries but you can make your unit run off of external power conserving your batteries. You can utilize any stallion with a USB connection to do this. You must however have the unit set up to Garmin Spanner in Setup>System>Interface mise en scene configured, otherwise the unit will go into USB mass storage mode and you will not be...
    One year after
I have owned the Oregon 550T for a year now and I come up with I have used every of its most important features, accessories and software. My overall rating is that there is apartment for improvement, its accessories are very expensive but it is one of the top hiking GPS products compared to others. There is so much spirit that can be reviewed so I'll try to cover purchasing decision factors and how-to tips that I call to mind a consider will be valuable for the ones looking for real and tested decision intelligence. - ACCURACY: I have used my Oregon mostly in the Shenandoah, VA area and have done hiking in South America as well. One accent in behalf of the Oregon is its ability to quickly pick satellite social and pinpoint your location. I have noticed though that when you drastically change your location, let's say North American vs. South America, the GPS will demand more time to discover the satellites in that area, but after that, it reconnects quickly. Some first problems; now mostly fixed!
UPDATE September 7 2010. The issues resolved below are solved by come out with 2.50 of the 62st firmware. I have no trouble recommending this unit at this point! I purchased the 62st recently and took it out for a 9 mile geocaching hazard. While I like the unit very much in general, it has one major problem. Like any hiking GPS, the 62st will curriculum vitae your track as you hike, letting you upload it to your computer when you return home. This is very effective for keeping track of your adventures. The accuracy of the 62st's GPS, combined with its barometric altimeter, lets you dexterously record your track for later use. Sadly what I discovered is that on the 62st simply serious buttons on the GPS interferes with the barometric altimeter. Pressing even a single knob on the GPS can result in spikes in the recorded data of 30 feet or more! On my first evaluate hike, my 62st GPS said that I had climbed more than 8000 vertical feet, while the other GPSes carried by...
Works OK, but could be improved
The 62S is my third GPS, purchased April 2011. With it, I purchased the MapSource Bishopric Navigator DVDs for NorthAmerica/Mexico (2011.1 NT) and Europe (2012.NT), a DaneElec 4 GB microSD credit card, and a Colorado Series Bike Mount (#11023). I purchased the 62S & mount from DigitalOasis & the probable plus Software from GPScity. Both companies shipped promptly. The 62S has v2.8 software. My untimely two GPSs are the GPSmap76 (purchased 2001) and the Edge 305 motorcycle GPS (purchased 2009). I have used the 76S successfully with Bluechart software for kayaking in the Pacific NW, and with Garmin MetroGuide 2007 for biking around WA Ceremonial. I give the 76S a 4/5 rating - a great device, which has saved me many times out in the fog. The 305 I give only 3/5 rating - too dear for what it is (essentially a fancy bike computer, without maps). Also, the 305 suffers from vibration and will dig up off when my bike hits a bump. I am an Electrical Engineer who writes curb software for...
WOW, this is one wonderful GPS
I can't get over how well the 62s gets a assistant signal...even indoors! I'm in my home office with a couple of small windows and due turned on the unit, after having it turned off for a couple of weeks: It booted and acquired the first aide-de-camp in less than 60 seconds and can navigate in less than 90 seconds, with four out of 5 bars on my timer strength meter. When I turned it off and then on again, I was able to navigate as soon as it booted...in 20 seconds. It seems to "keep in mind" what satellites are overhead and spends less time searching for signals if it has recently acquired a timer. I used the 62s while hunting and found that I could always get a solid signal regardless of how heavy the forest was. The 62s is so much better than the eTrex Vista I had been using since 2002...the 62s is in a abundant league. The user interface took a little getting against to, when compared to the eTrex Visa, but the 62s has a lot more features. The technology...

Buy the CD's and not the cards
I bought the Micro SD cards because I rationality it would be better so that all the maps are on the card and can just plug it into my GPS. However, if you want to download peculiar to routes or biking routes which I have done, you have to also purchase Way Point Trip Chief in order to transfer the information. If you purchase the CD you can transfer the information with Map Author which is included with the GPS. Had I known that I would have had to purchase extra software to be able to bring the information, I would have bought the CD's.
A must if you have a rental car or are on foot
OK, it IS uninteresting and overdone to give a name to your GPS monitor, but we did it anyway. She is Diane and we love her. Confused only rarely, she knows even the smallest, narrowest streets in France and Italy. Within easy reach hotels and gas stations are comprehensive and lifesavers, at times. The list of peculiar attractions and historical points of interest and landmarks is also comprehensive and a nice adding up to our "Rick Steve" tour book. I take (the map) loaded on my Garmin NUVI with me when I leave of absence the car, not only to prevent theft, but to navigate the streets of Lyon and Rome by foot as patently as behind the wheel, also to mark where I left my car, etc. etc. etc. I will never leave home without it.
Very with an eye to, comprehensive map of Europe
I found very speck wanting in this product. The maps are incredibly accurate, even for areas far from metropolis centers. My only complaint is that the interface does not behave the same as it does when looking at the built-in maps of North America. Many cities, for illustration, do not appear until the map is zoomed-in on the region, and only then does the map for that area load and zooming out is again achievable. Before I discovered this trick I was under the impression that very few metropolitan areas were covered. Only after zooming in to the neighborhood smooth did the right panel load, and it was possible to see the full layout of that country or sphere. The map also seems very recent. Some streets we did not expect to find were in fact on the map, so there is little to gripe in this regard. I was also happy with the price. Definitely beats buying a dedicated item for Europe.

How do navigators explain upcoming turns in racing?

For lesson in the W.R.C. How do navigators tell the driver how sharp a turn is and what other information do they provide? If achievable full points will go to anyone with an instructional video, or page link. Thanks!!!

There are several particular ways they do this.

Firstly there is a number system, from 1 to 6. Each number tells the driver how lustfully the corner is going to be. i.e. 1 is a very slow corner (usually a hairpin) & 6 is a unreserved
